This past Tuesday, over a dozen lucky high school and college interns got to interview all five members of SHINee at a noraebang in Apgujeong, Seoul operated by their management company SM Entertainment for the JoongAng Daily, a South Korean newspaper. The interview was an hour long and the interns asked the members of SHINee questions ranging from their musical influences (MJ, Stevie Wonder, Usher, and Maxwell), to their long term goals and dreams. Because the interviewers were around the same age as the band members they all could understand where the other was coming from. Some of the interesting bits of information from the interview included Key’s answer to “if there was anything the band members would like to try?” His answer, “an evening of study at school.” There was much laughter from the interns to his answer while they and some of the older SHINee members assured him that it was one life experience he could probably do without. Other members’ answers were bittersweet with a few saying they missed being regular young adults. Taemin said he wished he could go to a P.E. class and just play soccer with friends, while Minho replied “I miss the trivial things I used to share with my high school friends – the brief breaks between classes, eating from a lunch box and going to a hagwon [private cram school].” As for what they would be doing in 10 years, Onew answered that he’d have a pilot’s license, Jonghyun might be doing work as a vocal trainer, and the rest said that they would still be working in the music industry. The interns and SHINee all seemed to have enjoyed their interview. At the end, Minho stated “although we have gone through numerous interviews with professional journalists, we felt more comfortable with all of you.” “We hope it was helpful.” The interns’ biggest lesson learned: Be prepared and organized because your time with your interviewee(s) is short and “be aware of every scrap of information so as not to miss anything.” The internship program is held twice a year during the winter and summer school breaks for students who are interested in journalism so that they can experience life at a daily newspaper. They learn the ins-and-outs of running a paper and get instructions from editors, designers, and reporters while also doing things like proofreading and writing articles. This must have been one of their best assignments yet, not a bad way to have spent your winter vacation.
